Formed nearly 300 million years ago within the ancient Hercynian mountain range, Auvergne amethyst developed in vast natural fissures in the rock, known as veins. Formed by the major tectonic movements that once swept across Pangaea, these underground spaces facilitated the deep crystallization of quartz, of which amethyst is a variety. As the mountains eroded over time, these mineral-rich veins gradually emerged to the surface, revealing the famous deep-purple amethysts of Auvergne.

Today, the region is home to Europe’s largest deposit of amethyst quartz, renowned for the depth and richness of its color. Mining began as early as the 16th century at the initiative of Queen Margot, who had this stone cut for her jewelry and ornaments. Auvergne amethyst then experienced a resurgence thanks to the gemstone workshops at the Royat cutting center in the 19th century. Today, it remains an iconic stone of Auvergne’s mineralogical and gemstone heritage.
