Formed approximately 300 million years ago in the heart of the ancient Hercynian mountain chain, Auvergne amethyst was created within large natural fractures in the rock known as veins. Created by the powerful tectonic movements that once swept across Pangaea, these underground spaces allowed quartz (which amethyst is a variety) to crystallize deep underground. As the mountains gradually eroded, these mineralized veins slowly emerged to the surface, revealing the famous deep-purple amethysts of Auvergne. Today, the region is home to Europe’s largest amethyst quartz deposit, renowned for the intensity and richness of its color. Mined as early as the 16th century at the instigation of Queen Margot, who had this stone cut for her jewelry and ornaments, Auvergne amethyst subsequently experienced a resurgence thanks to the gemstone workshops of the Royat cutting center in the 19th century. Today, it remains an iconic stone of Auvergne’s mineralogical and gemstone heritage.
