Description
Pyromorphite – Les Farges Mine, Ussel, Corrèze, France
Superb specimen of green pyromorphite from the famous Les Farges Mines, near Ussel, in Corrèze, one of the classic and world-renowned localities for this species.
This 5.7 × 4 × 3 cm specimen features a spectacular association of bright green to olive-green pyromorphite crystals, developed in very dense and strongly intergrown aggregates. The crystals, with a typical hexagonal prismatic morphology, show complex terminations and aggregate growths in places, giving the whole specimen a particularly sculptural, luxuriant, and three-dimensional appearance.
The specimen is remarkable for the extent of its crystalline coverage: pyromorphite constitutes the bulk of the specimen and forms a truly compact mineral architecture, with numerous generations or stages of growth visible in the arrangement of the crystals. The variations in color, from luminous grass green to olive green, accentuate the relief and give the specimen beautiful depth.
Les Farges mines are world-renowned for the diversity of their pyromorphites, particularly their green crystallizations, their barrel-shaped habits, and their sometimes hollow-growth crystals. Specimens of comparable dimensions are regularly presented as high-quality collector’s pieces, and specialized literature as well as auction catalogs emphasize the classic and exceptional character of this former French mine.
A very fine collector’s piece, aesthetic and richly crystallized, from one of the most famous French localities for pyromorphite.
